On 26 October 2026, EU-LI-PHE hosted another EULIPHETalks webinar bringing together researchers and experts from Türkiye to discuss the role of phenotypic diversity, molecular genetics, and genomic approaches in livestock breeding and conservation.
The webinar highlighted scientific research and practical experiences involving indigenous goat populations, Anatolian water buffalo, and local sheep breeds, demonstrating how traditional breeding knowledge and modern genetic tools can contribute to sustainable livestock management.
Three invited experts presented their work:
- Prof. Dr. Mustafa Saatçi (Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University) delivered a presentation entitled “A True Story Based on Phenotypic Awareness”, highlighting the importance of recognising phenotypic characteristics in local livestock populations.
- Prof. Dr. Emel Özkan Ünal (Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University) presented “Molecular Genetics and Genomic Approaches in Buffalo Breeding in Türkiye: From Research to Practice”, exploring the application of genomic research in buffalo breeding.
- Prof. Dr. Mustafa Tekerli (Afyon Kocatepe University) discussed “Animal Breeding Approaches in Sheep and Buffalo: The Case of Afyonkarahisar”, sharing insights into regional breeding practices.
The event opened with welcoming remarks from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nursen Ozturk (İstanbul University-Cerrahpaşa) and Prof. Luca Fontanesi (University of Bologna), Chair of EU-LI-PHE. The discussion was moderated by Prof. Dr. Nazan Koluman (Çukurova University).
The webinar provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge on the integration of phenotypic observations, genomic technologies, and practical breeding strategies, reflecting EU-LI-PHE’s commitment to strengthening scientific collaboration and advancing knowledge of livestock phenomics across Europe.
The full recording is now publicly available on the EU-LI-PHE YouTube channel.
