We are excited to share the results of a recent study funded by the COST Action EU-LI-PHE that investigated key genetic traits in gilt performance testing. This research was conducted on two pig farms over three years and included 3664 gilts from Landrace, Large White, and Duroc breeds. Notably, EU-LI-PHE members contributed to this valuable work as study authors.
The study examined traits such as body weight, backfat thickness, and muscle depth using ultrasound measurements. The findings reveal moderate to high heritability for these traits, especially backfat thickness, indicating a strong genetic basis and significant potential for improvement through selective breeding. These insights pave the way for more effective selection programs that can accelerate genetic progress and enhance the economic profitability of pork production.
